The five rules every birthstone jewelry owner needs. Skip these and you'll dull the stone within a year.
Rule 1: take it off before you shower, swim, or sleep. Soap film and chlorine dull every gemstone — even diamonds.
Rule 2: store each piece in a soft pouch, separately. Stones scratch metal and other stones when stored loose.
Rule 3: clean with warm water, a drop of unscented soap, and a soft toothbrush. Skip ultrasonic cleaners on emerald, opal, pearl, and turquoise — they crack porous stones.
Rule 4: lotion, perfume, and hair spray go on first; jewelry goes on last. Always.
Rule 5: get the prongs checked once a year. A loose prong is how a stone gets lost.
